Bottoms Up!

As the dictionary defines, the word ‘zoo’ (noun) relates to: 1. an establishment which maintains a collection of wild animals, typically in a park or gardens, for study, conservation, or display to the public; 2. a situation characterized by confusion and disorder.

Through history, zoo´s transformed the way we see animals and ourselves. Emerging as an emblem of a colonial power, zoo´s have been always inspired critical debates.
Playing with the dualism of the word `zoo´, the photographic installation shows one part of the `´Primates´´ picture archive, which was photographed in the Schonbrunn Zoo on the request of a former Zoo director Otto Antonius (1925-1945). Installing the great ape portraits at the Praterstern railway station have the intention to re-interprete the context of the Praterstern as a site of control and transgression, but also to question the idea of identity - our ambiguous relationship with animals, and also with fellow humans. In context with the `´Problemzone Pratersten´´ where the `looking relations´ are very much determined by social structures, national identity, power hierarchies and politics it is important to reflect: who is looking and who is the observed one? It opens up a question of the cross-cultural misunderstanding we are facing today. It underlines the idea of ”The Human Zoo” described by Desmond Morris (1969), who proposed that the unnatural behavior of animals in zoos could help us understand, accept, and overcome the stresses involved in living in consumer societies. Because, `all sites of enforced marginalization - ghettos, shanty towns, prisons, madhouses, concentration camps - have something in common with zoos.’ (John Berger, `Why Look at animals´, in About Looking, 1980).

Paloma Tendero, Célula Madre, 2016, 3-teilige Billboardinstallation

My work explores the physical and psychological relationships that spring from inherited determinism. Through photography and sculpture I analysed the body beyond its physical structure; understanding how our genetic and biological characteristics.
Our bodies are containers which house our anatomy, alongside the stored memories of who we are and where we came from. Their forms betray a sculptural expression of each individual´s inheritance. While we attempt to craft ourselves into unique beings, separated from familial features and traits, our genetic and biological characteristics remain outside of our control, sewn inside us at the very moment of conception.

Previous to that, she graduated with BA Fine Arts at Complutense University, Madrid.
